Baseball hats, sports caps, trucker hats … whatever you call ‘em, baseball hats are
purely an American invention with a rich history of keeping the sun out of baseball players’ eyes.
It’s apparently all gone downhill from there for the lowly baseball cap. Let’s explore, shall we?

Baseball Hats - Say It Ain't So!

Baseball caps are obviously an American invention. The stylish and sophisticated hats, like the bowler, the fedora, and the top hat, are all European inventions. Of course, the one American invented hat has no dashing character whatsoever.

The Brooklyn Cap

The baseball hat was developed in Brooklyn in 1860. It was originally called a "Brooklyn cap." How, do you ask, did it come to be called a baseball cap then? The hat was initially designed by a Brooklyn sports team, and then other baseball teams began to catch on and began wearing them both on and off the field.

That's it. There are no cool military connections or beginnings in ancient Greece. Some baseball players needed to shield their eyes from the sun, and thus, a hat was born. The end.

From Baseball to The Simpsons

The baseball cap is primarily designed to showcase sports teams' logos. These are designed not only to be worn by athletes and employees, but by the hoards and hoards of fans.

Of course, baseball hats are not limited only to baseball. Plenty of professional football, basketball, and other assorted teams sell baseball caps as their largest single type of memorabilia. Also, the logos of popular brands and media entities are also often housed on baseball caps and then sold to consumers, such as the very popular Nike baseball caps.

Basically, baseball caps are just a way for companies and sports teams to get you to advertise their company for free. But don't tell anyone…we're pretty sure this fact is supposed to be a secret.

The baseball cap has endless references in popular culture and Americana. Film directors like Steven Spielberg and Michael Moore frequently wear baseball caps, and they have become an on-set trend among many directors. The Simpsons character Bart Simpson wears an iconic red baseball, which has even been the center of focus in some episodes.

The Birth of an Ugly Child

The baseball cap also led to the similarly designed trucker hat, which is one of the most loathed hats of all time. Originally meant to be a statement accessory to be worn by truckers and other blue collar workers, it somehow became a favorite accessory of the rich and famous. Trucker hats make the traditional baseball cap look like a Jackie O designer pill box hat.

Some view baseball caps an essential icon of Americana, while some view them to be cheesy and over worn. However, no matter how you spin it, this American invented hat certainly has a huge chapter in fashion history.
