Hats & Celebrities - An Unnecessary Influence
Undoubtedly, fashion trends are greatly influenced by celebrities. From Jackie O’s pillbox hats to Ashton Kutcher’s trucker hats, celebrities have played a major role in what type of accessories are donned on all our heads.
However, before you begin stalking the next young starlet in an attempt to copy her hat style, there are some ground rules about celebrity fashion when it comes to hats:
Rule One
Never, ever, copy a celebrity who you would not trust to babysit your child. If Britney Spears is wearing a trendy new cap, it is best to leave the bucket hat to her.
Rule Two
Celebrities are not “regular folk.” We forgive them for all their fashion crimes simply because we see them on the silver screen and red carpet. Unfortunately, the same does not hold true for non-SAG members. Rule Three
Celebrities do not care about impressing you, their undying fans. Instead, they care about pleasing celebrity fashion designers and magazine editors. If you see Sarah Jessica Parker in some bizarre head accessory, it was sculpted for her specifically by a million-dollar-salaried designer so that she could appear "whimsical" and "quirky" on the red carpet. Sarah Jessica Parker does not, in fact, have a quirky bone in her whole tiny little fragile body.
Now that you reviewed these rules, let us ask ourselves: why do we allow these famous people to provide such heavy influence over what we select as appropriate head gear? Even though Lindsay Lohan can’t figure out how to file her own taxes, why do the hats she wears become part of the Style Bible?
Avoiding the Vicious Celebrity Hat Cycle
Do not, under any circumstances, get caught up in the trap! The celebrity styles in which you should model your hats after should not be found in the pages of tabloid magazines, but rather in the pages of history books.
Choose your caps by basing your style decisions after iconic celebs like Audrey Hepburn or Jackie O. Do not model your head wear choices after Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake.
Here are some important things to remember about why, exactly, these ugly hats become popular. And even more importantly, here are some tips to avoid getting caught up in the celebrity style mayhem:
Bored Celebrity Designers
Celebrity designers have nothing to lose. They are already famous billionaires, and they get a little restless. They begin to long for the classy starlets of yesterday, and they start to resent the trashy celebutards of our time. Rather than trying to fix the disasters they are working with, they decide to have a little fun. Did you see what Emmy award winning costume designer Patricia Field put on top of Sarah Jessica Parker's head at the world premiere of the Sex and the City movie? Do you think she put that three foot high bird hat on the original Carrie Bradshaw because she genuinely thought it was stylish? No. She designed that hat for her own personal amusement. Lackluster Celebrity Education
Most celebrities have little to no real education, and they certainly are not fashion school graduates. Subsequently, their hat decisions are not always the brightest. Britney Spears finished ninth grade before embarking on her music career. Thus, her bucket hats were not inspired by years of studying design under Karl Lagerfield, but rather by what she thought was hot at her local Target. When it comes to hats, anybody like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton is not to be trusted.
Hit or Miss Celebrity Fashion
There are, of course, some celebrities who can be truly stylish in their hat choices. Someone like Heidi Klum or Jennifer Lopez will occasionally don a wide brimmed hat that is absolutely brilliant, inspired by the worldly celebrity fashion of yesteryear. Model celebrity styles after people whose judgment you would trust. Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears do not necessarily fall into this category.
Above all else, always pick your hats based on what you love. Celebrities come and go, but your personal tastes should always stay true to you! |
