Cowboy Hats – The Evolution
Cowboy hats were originally designed to be functional, shielding the eyes and faces of actual cowboys and ranch workers from the ever present hot southern sun. These styles inevitably were copied in popular films depicting western and southern living. John Wayne and Ronald Reagan proudly boasted cowboy hats in their films. These hats were simple, understated, and sans rhinestones or sparkly flare. Ah, memories.
These cowboy hats also found themselves in the music videos and live performances of country music singers. Garth Brooks and Johnny Cash both wore jet black cowboy hats, giving the trend a new flavor. However, these raven cowboy hats were still simple and stylish. They were still iconic and symbolic of classic Americana. When these fabulous entertainers wore these cowboy hats, they were wearing them as a tribute to all of the great southern stars who had worn them before their time. The look had not yet been corrupted or revamped by Hollywood. However, this would unfortunately all soon change.

High Fashion Gone Wrong
The hat culture of the Kentucky Derby and the Royal Ascot Ladies' Day has deep roots in British and European cultural traditions, where stylish hats are seen as a statement of grace and wealth. In contrast, hats worn to the Kentucky Derby by celebrities like Jessica Simpson or the Girls Next Door cast are simply loose interpretations of the original styles, interpretations that happen to be pink and sparkly.

Hats – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
How did we get to this point in hat civilization? There was a time when hats were the accessory. The Smithsonian proudly displays Abraham Lincoln's iconic top hat. Men's hats used to serve as a symbol of status and power. And as for women's hats? What would Jackie O have been without her pill box hat? Who would Audrey Hepburn have been without the legendary wide brimmed black straw hat she donned while hoofing down Fifth Avenue? There was a time when hats symbolized glamour, power, and wealth.
Today, bad hats are sadly abused by those who are bald and insecure. However, there exist scores of good hats that can turn any blasé outfit chic, as well as complement and flatter the wearer.
In an effort to restore the glamour and understated refinement of hats, we have some very simple suggestions that we believe are steps in the right direction. For example:
Barack Obama + Top Hat = Fashion Gold
Obama, yes you can wear hats stylishly. You are prescribing America a big helping of change with a side of hope and a dash of reform for good measure. You have inspired scores of montages from your instantly historical speeches set to the music of Les Miserables. Most importantly, you have been deemed a modern day Lincoln. Embrace it by changing your fashion sense. Steal Lincoln's style by donning a top hat. You have no idea how fashion-forward this good hat would be for you, Mr. President.

Ugly Hats – The Celebrity Influence
Celebrity designers have nothing to lose. They are already famous billionaires, and they get a little restless. They begin to long for the classy starlets of yesterday, and they start to resent the trashy celebutards of our time. Rather than trying to fix the disasters they are working with, they decide to have a little fun.
Did you see what Emmy award winning costume designer Patricia Field put on top of Sarah Jessica Parker's head at the world premiere of the Sex and the City movie? Do you think she put that three foot high bird hat on the original Carrie Bradshaw because she genuinely thought it was stylish? No. She designed that hat for her own personal amusement.
